New food varieties with prophylactic or even therapeutic effect will constantly gain more importance in the future. Malnutritional diseases cause more than 25 Billion EUR yearly for medical treatments in Germany. To be useful as prophylaxis for example against cancer or heart and circulatory diseases the share of healthful contents in vegetable food has to be increased.
New foods with prophylactic or even therapeutic effects will constantly gain more importance in the future (for example Golden Rice). In Germany each year more than 25 billion EUR are spent on the medical treatment of malnutritional diseases. To be useful as a prophylactic for example against cancer or heart and circulatory diseases the proportion of beneficial substances in vegetable foods must be increased.
Genetic engineering is also very useful when it comes to eliminating toxic substances or those with high allergenic potential. These new food varieties are thoroughly tested to ensure they are safe and the security of the consumer is protected. It remains imperative to provide security for the consumer. Within the scope of the leading project "Nutrition - modern techniques for food processing" those questions will be taken into consideration.
