Wheat is the second most produced cereal crop worldwide and is grown in more areas than any other crop in the world. It is an essential source of protein, and its consumption is growing as the world population is rising. Through the cereal markets that are getting tightened, one of the biggest stakes nowadays is to provide quality food on a large scale. Hybrid wheat is one of the solutions to answer this demand, by securing the wheat harvest thanks to the advantages hybrid wheat can bring.
Hybrid wheat was born in the middle of the 20th century in the United States, after being inspired by the large SUCCESS of hybrid corn in the US. Several attempts of hybridization were made over decades by big companies in the US, focusing on several technics to obtain the best hybridization system. In Europe then, collaborations between different external (Hybritech, Hybrinova) and internal SAATEN-UNION Group companies (Nordsaat the first, followed then by SAATEN-UNION-Recherche nowadays ASUR Plant Breeding) gave birth to the hybrids we know today. All together and strong from these alliances, they picked up the torch and continued breeding hybrids and producing seeds with CHA* technology, making SAATEN-UNION the only seed company offering hybrid wheat seeds in Europe. The SUCCESS of hybrid wheat breeding was obvious also out in the fields, with some iconic names like Hybnos, Mercury, Hysun, HYSTAR, HYKING, … to the next level of hybrid wheat (New Generation) HYMALAYA, HYVEGA, HYLIGO, SU Hycardi … In the meantime, the breeding activities well developed in Germany and France have been bundled with the partner AsurPlant Breeding in France.
Since 1985, breeders and researchers of SAATEN-UNION put a lot of effort into the development of high-potential hybrid winter wheat varieties. This intensive breeding combined with high production expertise makes SAATEN-UNION the unique hybrid wheat supplier in the market Thanks to the heterosis, the hybrid wheat crop benefices from the strength of the parents and beyond, like a better vigour under stressful and extreme conditions, better development of roots and leaves, higher disease resistances, an integration of traits of resistance against pathogens. Both together results in:
Secure harvest: higher yield stability with higher yields
Resilience of the crop: more vigorous & healthy plants
Savings on inputs: better nutrient as well as water efficiency
